Intel postpones Harpertown and Wolfdale for later, exposing AMD to attack
In 2021, Intel will promote the 65nm server processor market with dual-core Xeon 5100 series (Woodcrest) and quad-core Xeon 5300 series (Clovertown). 45nm quad-core (Harpertown) and dual-core (after all – Wolfdale or Wolfdate?) is scheduled not for the fourth quarter of 2021, as previously assumed, but for 2021. This information is provided by a source citing industry representatives “familiar with Intel’s plans.”. Thus, the recently published information about the postponement of the release of dual-core 45-nm processors to the next year has been confirmed.
In the meantime, Intel intends to gradually increase the share of Clovertown processors in servers with two processor sockets. From 30% in the first quarter of this year, it should grow to 70% in the fourth. At the same time, Woodcrest’s share will decrease from 60% to 30%.
It is assumed that the increase in the “lifetime” of 65nm Intel processors will help stabilize the situation in the server market with two processor sockets, since it will give manufacturers sufficient time to develop lines based on the processors of the two mentioned series.
At the same time, the delay in the transition to new processors may play into the hands of AMD, which, as you know, plans to release a new revision of its server processors (Rev. H) in the second half of the year. If these plans are successfully implemented, AMD will have a chance to further strengthen its position in the server war with Intel.
