Intel plans to reduce power consumption of its processors

The power consumption parameters of Intel processors, which will be released this year, have become known. So, budget Celerons based on the Core (Conroe-L) core, which will be released in the third quarter, will be 30 W less “power hungry” than their predecessors with the Netburst architecture (Cedar Mill) – TDP for them will be 35 W (as in rival in this niche – 65nm AMD Sempron).

The first two models, Celeron 430 and Celeron 440, will operate at 1.8 GHz and 2 GHz respectively (FSB – 800 MHz) and include 512 KB L2 cache. TDP drop will occur despite Celeron 400 series being manufactured using 65nm process. Starting in the third quarter of 2021, the old Celeron D (Netburst) will start disappearing from the market, giving way to the Celeron 400.

Intel does not plan to reduce TDP for mainstream processors. The new 45nm dual-core Wolfdale, expected at the end of the year, should of course have lower power consumption than the current 65nm Core 2 Duo, but Intel kept the TDP at 65W for them. Obviously, this level of energy consumption is still sufficient for the mass market segment. And the headroom can be used to boost Wolfdale frequencies in the future.

As you know, the quad-core Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 coming out in early January will have a TDP of 105 W. Therefore, mainboards to work with this CPU must support the FMB 05B power consumption specification. In the third quarter, desktop “quad-cores”, including Kentsfield and future 45-nm Yorkfield, will switch to G stepping and reduce TDP to 95 W (FMB 05A).
