AMD / ATI R600: specifications and results of the first tests against NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTX

In the last days of the outgoing year, our colleagues, who recently opened the Level 505 website, Santa Claus brought a graphics adapter that all enthusiasts are looking forward to – AMD / ATI R600. Unfortunately, the source did not publish photos, explaining this by the presence on the map of stickers with information that cannot be disclosed (more than a strange argument – do the guys really know how to use graphic editors?). Level 505 got the final version of R600, which was used in the process of certification of drivers for Microsoft Vista.

If you believe the source, AMD / ATI, although it was late with the releases of its DirectX10 product, wasted its time – according to the test results, the R600 bypassed the GeForce 8800GTX. The R600 specifications are quite interesting:

  • Shader units: 64 streaming 4-way SIMD processors, 128 shader operations per cycle
  • 32 TMUs, 16 ROPs
  • 512-bit memory controller (16 x 32 bits)
  • Memory frequency: 900 MHz (GDDR3 version, due in January 2021) or 1.1 GHz (GDDR4 version, due in March)
  • Memory bandwidth: 115 GB / s for GDDR3, 140 GB / s for GDDR4
  • Maximum memory size: 1024 MB
  • FP 32-bit precision support
  • Full compatibility with DirectX 10, as well as with the draft version (according to the manufacturer’s version) DirectX 10.one
  • Hardware support for GPU clustering (not only options with two or four GPUs, but also with any number according to the formula 2 ^ n – 2, 4, 8 …)
  • Hardware DVI-HDCP support
  • Hardware support for Quad-DVI (workstation versions only)
  • Typical power consumption: 230W

Testing was carried out on the following platform:

  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 (Quad Core), overclocked to 3.2 GHz
  • Memory: 2 GB OCZ Titanium PC2-6400 (DDR2-800) in dual channel mode
  • Motherboard: eVGA 122-CK-NF68-AR based on nVidia nForce 680
  • HDD: 2 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 ST3500641AS (500 GB, 7200 rev./ min, SATA II) in RAID 0
  • Sound: Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Platinum
  • OS: Windows XP Professional

As you can see, the PC configuration is powerful enough to compare graphics adapters. The following maps took part in the “race”:

  • ATI R600
  • NVIDIA GeForce 7950GX2: XFX GeForce 7950GX2 1GB GDDR3 (PVT71UZDF9)
  • NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTX: XFX GeForce 8800GTX 768 MB GDDR3 (PVT80FSHF9)
  • ATI Radeon X1950 XTX CrossFire: 2x Connect3D X1950 512MB GDDR3

The numbers speak best about the test results:

We also add that ATI R600 drivers are still in beta stage, and therefore the final results may turn out to be even higher. But we will make the final conclusion when AMD / ATI R600 appears in our laboratory.

According to the source, the R600 will hit the market on January 22, 2021 at an MSRP of $ 630. Multi-GPU Workstation Solutions Coming in March.
