Matsushita is going to make lithium-ion batteries expensive but safe
Many manufacturers are working on solving the problem of overheating and burning batteries. The Japanese company Matsushita Electric Industrial, whose products are known under the Panasonic trademark, have shared their successes and plans in this area.
The company intends to start production of new lithium-ion batteries, a feature of which is a high degree of protection against overheating. Production is due to start in April, with bulk shipments expected towards the end of next year.
The new technology, says Matsushita, will be used primarily in high-capacity batteries for high-value devices. This is due to the fact that new batteries will be more expensive than currently used samples.
Lithium-ion batteries remain virtually uncontested power sources for mobile electronic devices such as cell phones, MP3 players, PDAs and laptops.
Recent problems with Sony batteries have sparked a wave of interest in other possible power supplies. However, according to experts, in the coming years, the place of lithium-ion batteries will not be able to be taken by either fuel cells, with which the manufacturers of portable equipment have high hopes, or other promising sources that are still at the stage of laboratory development.
