VIA PT960 / PM960: chipsets supporting FSB 1333 MHz, DDR3 and PCI Express 2.0

VIA’s chipsets are no longer a solution for users looking for extreme performance. The situation could be changed by the PT960 and PM960 chipsets, which are being prepared in the bowels of the company.

Industrial sources say that their first samples should be ready in the second quarter of this year, and mass production is scheduled for the fourth quarter.

The chipsets are distinguished from each other by the presence of an integrated S3 Chrome 9 HD graphics core in the PM960, which provides hardware decoding of high-definition video in MPEG2 / 4, VC1, H formats.264, WMV9 and the possibility of chipset implementation on the motherboard of DVI / HDMI outputs with HDCP. In terms of 3D graphics, the technological level of such a core will be limited to support for Shader Model 2.0.

Otherwise, the characteristics of the products are the same. Both support Intel processors up to 1333MHz FSB (first to be the Core 2 Duo E6x50 due in Q3).

The onboard memory controller will support DDR2-1066 and DDR3-1333, but only in single-channel (!) mode. If this is really true, then such archaism will significantly reduce VIA’s chances of success in the high-performance segment of the market.

Among other advantages of PT960 / PM960, we note support for PCI Express 2.0, which will provide double the speed of current solutions (up to 5 Gbps per line).

In general, the new sets of system logic leave a pleasant impression, we hope that by the time of their release, the manufacturer will still implement support for dual-channel memory. Otherwise, budget systems will again become the lot of VIA PT960 / PM960.
