Details on AMD Next Generation Desktop Processors

Yesterday we announced new details about the future successor of the Opteron server processor, the quad-core Barselona. Thanks to the sources of our colleagues from the DailyTech website, we can now tell the desktop CPUs of the “star” family (K8L).

So, the flagship in the line of “green” desktop processors will be the quad-core Agena, an analogue of the server Barcelona. Its first models will be produced with an operating frequency in the 2.4-2.6 GHz range. As previously reported, Agena will include 2MB L2 cache (512KB per core) and a shared 2MB L3 cache. The TDP of the processor that will open the K8L series in the third quarter of this year is 125W.

Mass Market Targeting Dual-Core Kuma Launches at 2.0-2.9GHz. The L2 cache of this CPU will have a capacity of 1 MB, and the L3 cache will be 2 MB. Kuma comes in 65W and 89W TDPs, followed by Energy Efficient 35W at a later date.

Finally, Rana, the successor to the Sempron, will initially be released in frequencies from 2.1 GHz to 2.3 GHz. It does not provide a third-level cache at all, and the L2 cache has a capacity of 1 MB. The power consumption of this device falls into the 65W category, and it will be released at the same time as the 35W Kuma (tentatively – Q4 2021).

As previously reported, all of these CPUs are designed to work with motherboards equipped with an AM2 socket+. To install in AM2 boards, you will need to update the BIOS, and the performance of such a system will be significantly lower than the full AM2 + due to the use of HyperTransport 1.0.

AMD Agena FX is still on the company’s plans. The only difference between this processor and Agena is the Socket 1207 interface.
