Atmel launches radiation-free spacecraft memory
Multi-Chip Module (MCM) packaging technology has several advantages. Firstly, the space occupied by the microcircuit on the printed circuit board is reduced, secondly, the number of components is reduced, and thirdly, the overall efficiency of the structure increases. MCM technology was selected by Atmel for new memory devices – AT68166.
The novelty is a 16-megabit static random access memory (SRAM) intended for spacecraft. Its application allows to reduce the area of the printed circuit board by 50%, and the weight of the structure – by 75% compared to the use of four 4-megabit microcircuits.
Inside the AT68166 multi-chip module there are four AT60142 dies, manufactured using CMOS technology. To achieve a high degree of protection against radiation, the technological process with the norms of 0.25 μm and valves with an increased switching threshold are used.
Logically the module can be organized into one 512K x 32 bank, two 512K x 16 banks or four 512K x 8 banks. The memory is powered by a 3.3V source. Two modifications are available, differing in input circuits and speed – 25 and 20 ns.
