Samsung OneDRAM: Fast Hybrid Memory for Mobile Devices

Samsung has announced the creation of a prototype of OneDRAM memory, which, according to it, can significantly speed up the operation of mobile phones, portable consoles and other devices, especially when it comes to processing 3D graphics.

The model of such a chip demonstrated by the manufacturer has a density of 512 Mbit and operates at a frequency of 133 MHz. It complies with JEDEC LPDDR (low power double-data-rate) standard.

OneDRAM is able to significantly speed up the exchange of data between memory and the communication and media processor of a mobile device due to simultaneous access to it via two independent interfaces. One processor (cellular core logic) refers to the bank as SRAM and the other (application processor) refers to DDR memory. The amount of memory allocated for the needs of each processor changes dynamically. This approach eliminates the need for an additional SRAM chip.

Compared to current solutions, OneDRAM, according to Samsung, is able to offer 30% energy savings and 50% space savings with a fivefold performance advantage. The real speed advantage, of course, will be much less.

Smartphones, communicators and multimedia phones using OneDRAM are expected to hit the market in the second half of next year.
