Tensilica recently unveiled new configurable processors – Xtensa 7 and LX2. Using the base core and the ability to configure it, designers are able to create a processor that is optimally adapted to solve a specific problem. New items are the first configurable licensed kernels (more precisely, kernel families) with built-in on-the-fly Error Correcting Code (ECC). This makes them well suited for storage, networking, and on-board computers, where data integrity and error resilience are key benefits.
Xtensa 7 and Xtensa LX2 cores share a common instruction set, low power consumption (the lowest in the industry according to the developer) and high performance, exceeding the fixed configuration cores. Reconfiguration capability gives designers the ability to add application-specific instructions using Tensilica’s patented “automated processor generator”.
