New development allows transferring hundreds of bits with one photon
How much data can be transmitted with one photon? In principle, if we take into account that the so-called qubits (quantum bits), representing, for example, a superposition of discrete states of polarization, can contain information about several states at once, the amount of data encoded by one photon is noticeably more than one bit. And here scientists from the University of Rochester claim that they managed to encode a small image in one photon, slow it down (this operation corresponds to saving to a medium in the case of ordinary, electronic data), and then decode (read).
The test image consists of only a few hundred pixels, but this is already a tremendous breakthrough in the density of information recording. This image, which is an abbreviation of the name of the university, was created with a single pulse of light, however, the team of scientists reports that it is capable of holding up to hundreds of such pulses in one 10-cm cell at the same time – this approach in the future may allow creating an optical buffer for storing data in pulses of light.
In order to create an image of the letters of the abbreviation, a pulse of light is passed through a stencil. Under normal conditions, when there are many photons, a distinct shadow is created behind the stencil. If you reduce the light intensity to such a level when, in fact, single photons fly through the “target”, they, due to their wave nature, interact simultaneously with all points of the stencil, forming a “shadow” from a single photon.
Then the light pulses enter a cesium cell heated to the boiling point of water, where, as a result of resonant absorption and emission, they are delayed for up to 100 ns. Also, in the experiment of scientists, it is reported that the duration of the pulses is reduced by a factor of 100 (up to 1% of the original length), which can, translated into the language of electronic data, be interpreted as the compression of information.
