Seagate’s Future Plans: 30TB HDD with HAMR
Colleagues from the resource Wired News visited the Seagate research laboratory and published a very interesting report about their time there.
Here is the words of the company’s CTO, Mark Kryder: “When I came to Seagate 8 years ago, the recording density of 100 Gbps per square inch seemed incredible, even 20 Gbps per square inch seemed unlikely.”. Now Krider and his colleagues have reached 421 Gbit / sq. inch and this is far from the limit. The limit of perpendicular recording technology is now seen as about 1 Tbit / sq. inch, after which Seagate intends to master new technologies that will bring this figure to 50 (!).
When applied to a hard drive of a standard form factor of 3.5 inches, this means a storage capacity of 30 TB.
We have already written about the technology that will allow you to achieve an impressive breakthrough. It’s called HAMR (heat-assisted magnetic recording). In this case, we are talking about magnetic disks with areas heated during operation with the help of a laser, on which recording is made at any given moment. Data is recorded more easily on the heated area, after which the recording area is cooled and thus stabilized.
This approach makes it possible to overcome the theoretical limit of magneto-optical technology – the so-called “superparamagnetic limit” associated with the fact that with increasing disk capacity, the information recording density increases, i.e.e. number of magnetic particles per unit disk surface area. At a very high recording density, neighboring particles begin to interact with each other, and the data recorded in this way is lost.
Earlier, Fujitsu and Hitachi have already reported about work in the development of HAMR.
Seagate expects to launch commercial products in the next decade.
