Icron WiRanger: wireless USB hub

While the fastest peripheral manufacturers are introducing their wireless USB hubs based on Ultra-WideBand (UWB) technology, Icron Technologies has decided to use proven technologies.

Announced WiRanger is the industry’s first to use Wi-Fi 802.11g, and is designed to wirelessly connect devices such as printers, scanners, webcams, drives, MP3 players to a PC.

Number of USB ports 2.0 for a product is equal to four. The range, declared by the manufacturer, is 30 meters, which is three times more than that of solutions based on UWB. However, don’t forget about the downside of using 802.11g – the data transfer rate is limited to 54 Mbps, which makes it unjustified to use such a hub in conjunction with fast drives.

On sale Icron WiRanger should appear in early spring this year. The price is not disclosed, however, it is likely to be lower than the Belkin product.
