Epson and Fujitsu complete work on FRAM
Epson and Fujitsu announced the results of a joint project to create a new generation of ferroelectric memory (FRAM, Ferroelectric Random Access Memory), which began in June the year before last.
Recall that a new type of nonvolatile memory is based on the ferroelectric effect, which consists in the preservation of electric polarization by local sections of the dielectric film in the absence of an electric field.
As part of a joint project, the companies created technology for forming, processing and evaluating the characteristics of a new ferroelectric film, as well as a technology for the production of highly integrated FRAM – the integration density of elements is four times higher than that of the previous generation of FRAM chips. Let us also recall that the ferroelectric layer can be added as an additional stage of processing semiconductor wafers according to the standard CMOS process, which greatly facilitates the production of chips of a new type of memory. It is also argued that the storage devices created using the new technology provide high reliability – at least 100 trillion. read / write cycles.
According to the source, Epson intends to combine the results obtained in the framework of the joint work with Fujitsu with its developments in the field of low-cost integrated circuits to create solutions aimed at applications in portable devices powered by batteries.
Fujitsu, in turn, intends to focus on mass production of chips using the new technology with the aim of making FRAM publicly available. However, it has not yet been announced when the first chips with the Fujitsu logo will appear on the market.
