Intel reveals new details about Penryn processors, Moore calls them 50th anniversary event

We have already talked about the strategy, which Intel calls the Tick-Tock Model, and which consists in the fact that the proven architecture is transferred to a new technical process, after which processors of the new architecture are released according to the already proven technological standards. The next technical process, 45 nm, will be mastered by the company on Penryn-generation processors – Yorkfield and Wolfdate (Wolfdale), which are not too architecturally different from the current Core 2 Duo / Extreme.Significant architecture change will take place in the generation of Nehalem processors.

Some of the technological innovations that will be implemented in Penryn were kindly told by Intel executives, Mark Bohr and Steve Smith.

So, dual-core Penryn processors (codenamed Wolfdate) will consist of 410 million. transistors, four-core Wolfdate – out of 820 million. For comparison – in Conroe (Core 2 Duo) – 298 million. transistors.

Keeping the Socket 775 processor socket for such processors will not guarantee the compatibility of current motherboards with them – there is a possibility of electrical incompatibility.

Intel officials confirmed that Penryn will differ from Conroe with new materials used as a dielectric – it will replace silicon dioxide, which has been used by Intel in recent decades, in favor of dielectrics with a large dielectric constant (high-k). This will eliminate the need for polysilicon gates and use metal. This step alone can increase the switching speed of transistors by 20% and, as a result, increase the speed of processors.

Gordon Moore, author of the famous law, calls the introduction of high-k dielectrics the most significant change in transistor technology since the late 60s. Then polysilicon gate transistors were introduced.

The material used as a high-k dielectric contains hafnium, there is no other information about it.

Production of Penryn processors will start in the second half of this year at D1D factories in Oregon, Fab 32 in Arizona and, a little later, at Fab 28 in Israel.

Also, something was told by Intel officials about the more distant plans of the company. Intel’s Lithographic Process Improvement Manufacturing Plan Does Not End with 32nm Regulations. The technical process, codenamed P1270, will be implemented by the company starting in 2021 and will mark the beginning of the implementation of 22-nm standards.

Intel representatives concluded their speech with the following thesis: “Nehalem architecture will appear in 2021”.
