The situation with the standardization of the cost of a print obtained on a printer
Until recently, the question of the real cost of a print received on a printer did not have a clear answer. Each manufacturer used its own measurement technique, and the information supplied to customers was often far from the real state of affairs.
Back in December 2021, the Office of Fair Trading (OFT, Organization of Fair Trade) approached the leading printer manufacturers, Epson, Canon, HP and Lexmark, so that the latter would develop a unified methodology for measuring ink consumption, cartridge life, etc.P.
At the moment, the cost of consumables for the life of the printer can be many times higher than the purchase price. The situation is aggravated by the fact that manufacturers do not always fill the cartridge with ink as much as possible so that the buyer comes to them as soon as possible for the next.
The OFT has resulted in a measurement technique developed in December by ISO (International Organization for Standardization) in collaboration with the aforementioned companies. It provides for mandatory testing at a standardized temperature; on several types of paper; multiple copies of the same printer model; with multiple sets of cartridges, etc.P.
ISO invites manufacturers to use this methodology now, despite the fact that it has not yet been adopted as a standard. Only HP and Epson have listened to the organization so far, Lexmark plans to do so by the end of the month. Canon has not yet responded to ISO recommendations and continues to use its own method.
