Rambus was able to significantly reduce the power consumption of the serial bus

High-speed architecture company Rambus has unveiled a new development to reduce the power consumption of platforms operating with data at speeds of the order of several gigabits per second. According to Rambus, its specialists managed to reduce power consumption by three times compared to traditional implementations of the serial bus, while maintaining high performance. In laboratory conditions, a test transceiver has been demonstrated that is capable of transmitting more than 3,600 Tbit of data (equivalent in volume to approximately 100,000 regular DVDs) with a power consumption equal to two AA batteries.

Documentary evidence of the project’s results will be presented to the public on February 14 at the International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC).

The key to reducing power consumption is reportedly a systematic approach to transceiver architecture. After analyzing the distribution of power consumption in existing designs, Rambus specialists created a test 90nm chip that provides a speed of 6.25 Gbps. The power consumption of the new product is 14 mW, which is equivalent to 2.2 mW per gigabit per second.

It is assumed that the development can be used in promising parallel and serial buses for power-sensitive applications.

Recall that the latest achievements of Rambus in the field of architectural solutions for memory subsystems were shown at the DesignCon 2021 conference, held in the USA two weeks ago.
