Launched the first liquid lens camera
More precisely, we are talking about the AFCM MI285 autofocus camera module, developed by the specialists of the Varioptic company. The module is based on the Varioptic Arctic 416 auto-focusing lens. The resulting product has a very small size (diameter – 8.5 mm) with a resolution of 2 megapixels, which is well in line with modern trends – miniature camera modules are in demand in compact cell phones.
The work of an unusual lens is based on the electrowetting phenomenon, which is illustrated in the diagram (and has already been described in detail in one of our news items). A drop of water is placed on a metal substrate covered with a thin insulating layer. If a voltage is applied to the substrate, the angle of contact with the liquid can be changed. The lens uses two immiscible liquids, one as an insulator, the other as a conductor. By changing the voltage, it is possible to change the curvature of the interface, which, in turn, leads to a change in the focal length of the lens. By the way, an equally interesting approach to the creation of lenses was proposed at one time by Canadian scientists.
Varioptic ‘liquid lenses’ have no moving parts, giving them a distinct advantage over traditional autofocus lenses in terms of size, reliability, speed, price and power consumption. Speaking of price, it is worth noting that the module is priced at $ 16 (in a batch of 50,000). Apparently, the fact that the order for the production of the novelty was placed in China also contributed to the price reduction.
