Should VIA be wary of the Intel UMD platform?

The Ultra Mobile PCs (UMPCs), which have generated much of the headlines throughout the past year, continue to gain attention this year. VIA was able to improve its positions in this segment due to the fact that Microsoft and Samsung, who first relied on low-voltage Core Duo, subsequently began to use VIA C7-M processors, since they, firstly, are cheaper (and the price is still the main problem place UMPC), and, secondly, they consume less electricity, allowing you to achieve greater autonomy (which is also very important for such devices that are not yet able to compete in this parameter with a PDA). Perhaps, among the leading UMPC manufacturers, the only one who is in no hurry to use VIA processors in their solutions and continues to use Intel processors is ASUS (in particular, ASUS R2 is based on Celeron-M ULV and Intel 910M).

But Intel does not intend to give up and plans to present the UMD platform, which will integrate the processor, northbridge and southbridge. Moreover, according to a company representative, referred to by the source, UMD will be able to provide better performance at a lower price than VIA C7-M.

For example, Michael Chen, head of the Asia-Pacific region of Intel Embedded Systems, argues that the virtue of UMD lies in the integration of all the necessary interfaces and platformization. Chen expressed confidence that although Microsoft is now actively working with VIA, Intel and Microsoft will have a new chance for cooperation when the UMD platform is released to the market.

On our own note, the UMD platform can also become the first trial sample of the integration of the processor and graphics adapter (as well as memory controllers and I / O interfaces – in short, all the functions that are performed by the north and south bridge of Intel chipsets). After all, the practice of “running in” mass solutions on mobile platforms has long been quite common for Intel, and there is also a unique opportunity to test this new approach for itself in a new market segment where losses can be regulated – given how weak the demand so far, we are talking about profit not yet.
