AMD Athlon 64 X2 processors lose up to 45% in price
Soon after the drop in server processor prices, AMD did the same with desktop models.
The fastest dual-core Athlon 64 X2, 5600+ processor offered by the manufacturer fell in price from $ 505 to $ 326, while the second-most powerful model lost even more in price – $ 218, or about 45%. Recall that in the near future a new flagship of the line should be presented – Athlon 64 X2 6000+, clocked at 3 GHz.
Athlon 64 X2 5200+ and 5000+ (this applies to both 65nm and 90nm models) dropped by $ 63.
Younger representatives of the Athlon 64 X2 line became cheaper by 14-33 dollars.
The reduction in price of single-core Athlon 64 processors was quite small – 3800+ and 3500+ will be sold only 8 and 3 dollars cheaper, respectively.
After a hiatus, AMD resumed sales of the junior single-core Athlon 64 3200+, which will cost $ 78 in versions with Socket 939 and AM2.
A complete list of prices before and after the reduction is shown in the table:
As you can see, AMD’s repeated statements that pricing methods of dealing with Intel are no longer the basis of the company’s strategy do not correspond to reality. It is important for AMD not to lose market share before the release of its family of processors, codenamed Stars, scheduled for the second half of the year, and it is quite possible that before that time we will see at least one more price cuts for the current line of chips from this manufacturer.
