Hitachi reduces the size of RFID dust particles again, this time to 50 x 50 x 5 microns

New RFID chips, created by specialists from the Japanese company Hitachi, measure 0.05 x 0.05 mm. These are record-breaking small products of this kind to date. You can compare them to human hair (right) and the smallest Hitachi RFID chips on the market (left).

By leveraging advances in the semiconductor industry, Hitachi has succeeded in 64 times smaller new chips compared to commercially available RFID chips, which are 0.4 x 0.4 mm. The volume of non-volatile memory of new products – 128 bits. This is enough to store a 38-digit decimal identifier.

New chips are nine times smaller than the prototype, measuring 0.15 x 0.15 mm and 7.5 microns thick, recently unveiled by the company. The thickness of the “dust grains” – 5 microns. This allows them to be imprinted on paper such as banknotes, securities and documents.

The emergence of new chips on the market is expected in the next two to three years.
