Saturn Drive Cartridge System: hard drives as removable media?

The increase in volumes and the decline in the cost of hard drives pushed Addonics Technologies to create a storage system based on the use of hard drives as removable media. The solution presented yesterday was named Saturn Drive Cartridge System (SDCS). According to the manufacturer, replacing cartridges in the new system (replacing them on the fly) is similar to replacing cassettes in a VCR.

The Addonics SDCS system is available in either SATA or USB, and is designed for 300GB, 500GB and 750GB cartridges. Addonics SDCS includes:

  • SDCS Tray, which fits into a 5.25-inch bay of a PC case equipped with a USB or SATA interface;
  • SDCS cartridges of 300, 500 or 750 GB;
  • Optional USIB cable that allows you to use the SDCS cartridge as an external storage device by connecting to a PC equipped with USB, Firewire, eSATA or Cardbus / PCMCIA interface.

By the way, the latter feature gives Addonics SDCS cartridges a clear advantage over magneto-optical disks, tape cartridges and other removable media that cannot be used without a drive.

The system does not require installation of drivers and is ready to work immediately after connection. Allegedly, the new product is compatible with Windows Vista, XP, 2021, 2000, 98SE and Mac OS X.

Addonics Saturn Drive Cartridge System manufacturer’s pricing starts at $ 200 for the cheapest kit with one 300GB cartridge.
