Microsoft is working on a computer system that will give virtual “immortality”

The fact that Microsoft is working on such a project became known thanks to a recently disclosed patent, which describes an “immortal” information storage and access platform. Posted by Andy Wilson at Microsoft.

In his work, Wilson raised a problem that historians and philosophers mostly think about – how to preserve information and pass it on to subsequent generations. Considering that we are experiencing an information boom, the amount of information that is irretrievably lost is enormous. And so far there is no reliable way to preserve it, not only for millennia, but also for a much shorter period of time. And the point is not only in the absence of reliable carriers, but also in their rapid obsolescence. Even if descendants find a Blu-ray disc untouched by time 1000 years later, will it be a simple mystery for them to extract the information stored on it??

The author sees a way out in the creation of a physical artifact based on a computer storage system that would describe an object (biological or inanimate) and its history. Such artifacts could be installed as part of a memorial stone or urn when it comes to a person, and a monument or memorial plaque for buildings and structures.

The carrier of information stored in an artifact, for obvious reasons, should not include moving parts. This can be flash memory, plates made of durable material, and so on. As an example, the carrier of a holographic image created by “burning” pits on a diamond substrate is given.

The energy for the artifact is planned to be obtained from external power sources – sunlight, sound waves, heat, magnetic induction, and so on. In general, energy is needed mainly when users (read – descendants) access data. Therefore, the power source will be part of the information reader (User Interface / Reader), and the use of the above methods will allow powering the artifact contactlessly and avoid the problem of wear of the connectors.

A person leaving behind an artifact has the right to restrict access to it. DNA analysis and other biometric methods can be used to identify relatives, for example.

Developers pay a lot of attention to the user interface and the possibility of its improvement in the future without changing the system as a whole. It also discusses the issue of creating keys that would help descendants to recover the encoded data in case of loss of encoding (the same ASCII may well “die”). Decoding instructions are planned to be written in all major languages.

Artifacts can be part of a network – local or global. Imagine what it would be like to receive an email from an artifact left by your ancestor. Or find a person in a search engine and, having connected to the artifact, find out his story “firsthand”.

It should be noted that this project is a “background” development by Microsoft. However, the fact that a patent was obtained for this system (the application itself was filed in June 2021) gives reason to consider the company’s intentions serious.
