SuperFetch and ReadyBoost: what Vista technologies bring? First performance tests

Among the many innovations brought by the new operating system Vista, there are two technologies designed to speed up PCs through the use of flash memory: SuperFetch and ReadyBoost.

The first of them works like this: frequently used system libraries and program files are loaded into RAM, which allows you to launch and work with programs much faster. For example, if, having come to the office in the morning, you usually launch a browser, email program, instant messaging client, word and spreadsheet processors, then after waiting a few minutes with a cup of coffee after starting the computer, you will see how familiar applications start to start much faster. The main components of frequently used programs in a few minutes after starting the PC will already be in its RAM.

ReadyBoost technology is based on expanding RAM by using flash drives with USB 2 interface.0. Their access time is much shorter than that of hard drives, which should give a gain in overall system performance when placing a paging file on a flash disk. It should be noted that Vista will not store critical data on such drives, so you can retrieve the latter at any time without losing data.

The Tom`s Hardware resource has conducted tests of the effectiveness of SuperFetch and ReadyBoost technologies on a modern system equipped with 512 MB, 1 GB or 2 GB of RAM.

As test applications, we used Microsoft Outlook with a mail message file of 1.5 GB, Internet Explorer 7, which opens a locally saved web page, and an OpenOffice Writer text editor with several open documents.

The following sequence of actions was performed:

First cycle:

  • Start Windows Vista, pause for 2 minutes
  • Launching Internet Explorer, pause of 5 minutes (15 minutes if a ReadyBoost-enabled flash drive was connected for the first time)
  • Start Microsoft Outlook, pause for 2 minutes
  • Launch OpenOffice Writer, pause for 2 minutes
  • Closing OpenOffice Writer
  • Close Microsoft Outlook
  • Close Internet Explorer, pause for 2 minutes

Second loop:

  • Launch Internet Explorer, pause for 2 minutes
  • Start Microsoft Outlook, pause for 2 minutes
  • Launch OpenOffice Writer, pause for 2 minutes
  • Closing OpenOffice Writer
  • Close Microsoft Outlook
  • Close Internet Explorer

The third cycle is similar to the second.


After the third cycle was completed, a reboot was performed and the second and third cycles were repeated.

The work of SuperFetch was analyzed without a connected flash drive, with it – the joint work of SuperFetch and ReadyBoost. The results can be viewed on the attached diagrams (Microsoft Outlook and OpenOffice Writer, about 50 kb each). If you comment with words, then they are impressive. OpenOffice Writer 2 load time with 512 MB RAM.1 and Outlook 2021 decreased by the third time from 9-10 seconds to 2-4.

Adding a gigabyte flash drive can further reduce application launch times (up to 2-3 seconds).

With the increase in the amount of memory to 1 or 2 GB, the advantage from the use of SuperFetch becomes far from so obvious, although some acceleration can still be noticed.

As for ReadyBoost, its benefits in the vast majority of cases can be seen only with a stopwatch measuring tenths of a second.

In general, we can conclude that new technologies can speed up the work of PCs, especially those that are equipped with a small amount of RAM.
