Dry fuel no longer needs water for fuel cells

According to the source, the Japanese company Kurita Water Industries has proposed to use solid methanol in fuel cells. The first samples of “dry fuel” were shown at Expo 2021 this week.

Kurita Water Industries specializes in water treatment equipment. The accumulated experience allowed the company’s specialists to create solid methanol using lattice technology used in water treatment plants. According to the company, solid methanol provides a safe alternative to liquid methanol for fuel cells.

The essence of the technology of lattice structures is that the “guest compound” (which in this case is methanol) is held in a solid state by the “receiving compound”.

Liquid methanol is highly flammable and toxic. Therefore, fuel cells have to use durable cartridges for storing and transporting methanol, and transportation of methanol by air is generally prohibited. New technology will overcome these limitations.

The first information about the development of Kurita was published in October 2021. Then water was needed to “turn on” the elements. The prototypes shown this year do without water: it is enough to place dry granular material in a fuel cell, and power generation begins.

In terms of energy density, solid methanol is about half that of its liquid counterpart, but it eliminates the need for a bulky cartridge. With this in mind, the performance of the two fuels becomes comparable.

The first serial products (most likely, these will be devices that allow replenishing the charge of the built-in battery of a mobile phone) are expected on the market this summer.

The company’s long-term plans include the creation of a compact source that does not exceed the size of an SD memory card. Such “batteries” will be inserted directly into mobile phones.
