ONFI 1.0: Flash will become as replaceable as RAM

Intel, Hynix, Micron, Sony and other manufacturers leading the development of the Open NAND Flash Interface (ONFI) have announced that its specification is ready and will soon be able to abandon the proprietary interfaces between flash memory and its controllers. This step means that flash memory in various products will be as easily replaceable as RAM is now.

If manufacturers accept ONFI 1.0 into service, the improved and unified interface can significantly reduce, or even make it unnecessary to modify the software when introducing a new flash memory module into the design of the electronic device. In addition, it is expected to standardize the NAND flash memory instruction set and provide the infrastructure to further develop the capabilities of the technology.

The ONFI interface will be used in the Robson technology, which will be available in laptops based on the Santa Rosa platform, and its essence boils down to using the buffer flash memory on the MiniPCI board to record the most frequently used applications.

The initiative to create ONFI was made public in the spring of last year and now, the work on creating the specification has been completed. The main obstacle to the spread of the new interface is the fact that Samsung, which is currently the leader in the NAND flash market, is not among the companies supporting it.
