Macro-atom-on-a-chip – a promising development for quantum computers?

The latest development of scientists from Yale University, perhaps, will give hope for an even faster creation of quantum computers: Robert Schoelkopf and Steven Girvin created an artificial atom capable of storing and absorbing individual photons of the microwave range. This was reported in the latest issue of the journal Nature, published on February 1 (No. 445, C. 515-518).

Research at Yale began several years ago, and in 2021, scientists even came up with their own name for their field – integral quantum electrodynamics. Under this name lies the discipline that studies the interaction of integrated circuits with microwave photons.

The photo shows an image of the response of an artificial atom, obtained using a scanning electron microscope. “Atom”, consisting of several billion aluminum atoms, is placed inside the resonator. The level of the signal that passed through the resonator differs markedly for each discrete number of photons present inside the resonator.

The main result of the study is an increase in the size of a quantum mechanical object from the size of an atom or a molecule to an almost macroscopic scale, which, in principle, makes it possible to create a quantum computer using modern technologies for the production of semiconductor integrated circuits. There is little to do – to teach the brainchild of scientists to manipulate quantum states.
