AMD continues to win back the market, pushing Intel back to 1995 level
Last quarter, AMD was able to capture the largest ever x86-compatible processor market share in its history. It now owns 25.3% of the total supply. Such data is provided by a source with reference to the analytical company Mercury Research.
Mercury Research CEO Dean McCarron said: “Intel had a smaller share than it does now, but it is now the smallest since late 1995.”.
AMD Share in Desktop and Notebook Processor Segments Increases QoQ from 23.3% to 25.1%. Intel’s share over the same period decreased from 76% to 74.4%.
AMD’s success drives Dell servers, laptops and desktops and Gateway servers. In addition, AMD products were preferred by IBM, HP and Sun.
Analysts believe traditional year-end sales gains have contributed as AMD’s portfolio is more consumer-focused.
At the same time, AMD is critically assessed on Wall Street. Firstly, the company showed losses in the reports (explained by the acquisition of ATI), and secondly, it is now under serious pressure from a competitor who has imposed a price war, in which it is in a more advantageous position, since it has a solid margin of safety.
