Autodesk and Microsoft Agree to Seamlessly Integrate DWF Technology in Windows Vista
As part of Autodesk University, Autodesk announced a partnership with Microsoft to seamlessly integrate DWF technology into Windows Vista using XPS (XML Paper Specification). This will enable Windows Vista users to work with DWF files without having to purchase or download additional plugins.
DWF files created according to the XPS specification can be automatically opened in Windows Vista using the XPS Viewer. To enable this, Autodesk will take the necessary steps to bring the DWF format to XPS.
Windows Vista and XPS will provide CAD users and their collaborative development colleagues with a single operating environment with advanced search capabilities for a wide variety of parameters, including metadata tags, to create much richer products. DWF technology combines a large number of data elements into compact, high-quality files, allowing designers to easily share their ideas with manufacturers, contractors and clients. The recipient will be able to instantly view the design solution using the options built into Windows Vista. Users can now be confident that their team can have detailed information and a deeper understanding of the project without being a CAD specialist.
In addition to the automatic viewing of DWF files, the desktop search function will allow consumers to search for relevant files faster and easier with Live Icons and Preview Pane functions. For example, a product developer can search for files based on a specification, project name, or any pertinent information such as address or vendor name. Regardless of where the information is stored, Windows Vista returns Live Icons – a thumbnail image of the extracted file – it allows the designer to see the main content of the files and immediately select the desired document without scrolling and viewing large files, which can take several minutes to open. Also, designers can choose advanced search and use the preview pane to quickly find the file they are looking for.
