Alchip Technologies, working in collaboration with the University of Tokyo and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) on the GRAPE-DR supercomputer, has announced an important milestone. The first workable “silicon” of the SING processor is ready, which will form the basis of the GRAPE-DR.

Recall that according to the idea of ​​the project privateers, GRAPE-DR should become the world’s fastest supercomputer. It will be able to perform 2000 trillion operations per second (2 PFLOPS). The supercomputer is planned to use chips containing 512 processors in one crystal. The number of logic gates in each of them exceeds 60 million. In addition, a cache memory is integrated into the crystal – 10 million bits of SRAM memory.

Computers in the GRAPE series have won the Gordon Bell Prize six times, an important award in the world of supercomputers. In terms of performance, GRAPE-DR should be 31 times faster than its predecessor GRAPE-6 (64 trillion operations per second) and will be used for general-purpose computing.

According to the developers, the creation of the SING processor was very difficult due to its complexity, in particular, due to the large number of gates and high operating speed (clock frequency – 500 MHz). The divide and conquer strategy helped – Alchip specialists divided the chip into three levels of hierarchy for parallel implementation. The chips were manufactured at TSMC facilities using the field-proven 90nm eight-layer process. Flip-chip BGA packages were used to pack the resulting crystals 18 x 18 mm in size. It is noteworthy that the consumption of microcircuits does not exceed 50 W.

In addition to the University of Tokyo, the GRAPE-DR project involves the Japan National Astronomical Observatory, the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, NTT Communications, other corporations and research organizations. The creation of a supercomputer with a performance of 2 PFLOPS is scheduled for 2021.
