Intel’s upcoming chipset generation: “Goodbye Netburst”
As you know, in the second quarter of this year, Intel is going to introduce the Bearlake family of chipsets, and during the year there will be six sets of system logic with the mandatory number “3” in the name:
- G33 – entry-level chipset with integrated GPU
- P35 – Mass Market
- G35 – with integrated graphics, targeted at the mass market
- Q33 – corporate sector, entry level
- Q35 – corporate sector, medium level
- X38 – aimed at enthusiasts
From the moment Bearlake entered the market, Intel will actively “push into a corner” processors with the old Netburst architecture, accelerating the approach of the crossover of the old and new generations of CPUs. Netburst is currently a salvation for AMD (because it is difficult for green processors to compete with Core) and a burden for Intel.
The first impetus (or “carrot”) to this will be the reduction in prices for Core 2 Duo in the second quarter of 2021. And the “whip” that should motivate users to switch to Core processors will be the lack of Netburst support in Bearlake.
All motherboards based on the new generation of Intel chipsets will be compatible with Core 2 Duo processors (including the E6050 series with 1333 MHz FSB), as well as entry-level CPU families: Pentium E 2000 dual-core and Celeron 400 single-core.
Quad-core Core 2 Quad will be supported only by P35, G35 and X38 chipsets, and only X38 will be honored to work with Core 2 Extreme. The fact that today’s P965 supports Core 2 Extreme is due only to the lack of a suitable alternative in the form of a set of system logic of the Hi-End class.
It is comforting that all Bearlake representatives will be able to work with a 45nm CPU, including the quad-core Yorkfield and the dual-core Wolfdale.
