Freescale’s World’s Smallest RF Solution Supports 13 Cellular Bands
Freescale Semiconductor Claims World’s Smallest Multi-Band RF Solution for 3G Mobile Terminals. The novelty supports EDGE and UMTS. Its tiny size is expected to allow developers to further reduce the size and cost of cell phones and other devices designed to work with mobile networks. Important features of the solution are “the world’s simplest software model” and a digital interface that meets the specifications of the open standard DigRF.
RFX300-30 is a dual-chip set that supports multi-mode and multi-band UMTS (9 bands) and GSM / EDGE (four bands) networks. Implemented support for HSDPA (speed up to 7.2 Mbps) and HSUPA (up to 5.76 Mbps). According to the manufacturer, RFX300-30 offers the most complete coverage – 13 ranges – among similar offerings on the market. Freescale RF subsystem is designed to be manufactured using 90nm CMOS technology.
RFX300-30 includes Freescale MMM7210 UMTS / EDGE transceiver and MMM6038 power amplifier. Together they contain an analog signal processing unit, an RF receiver and RF transmitter, a power amplifier, power control circuits, and a number of passive components, usually mounted on the board. The presence of a digital interface, made according to open specifications, allows designers to share several subsystems without worrying about compatibility issues.
RFX300-30 trial samples are currently available. Mass shipments should begin in the fourth quarter.
