PCI-SIG (Special Interest Group) Industry Standardization for PCI Express Solutions Announces PCI Express External Cabling 1 Specification.0. It formulates all the features of external PCI Express (PCIe) connections.PCIe cables are used for connecting external devices and communication between internal modules that need a cable connection. It is noteworthy that the PCIe External Cabling guide, prepared by the group members, provides practical advice on cable length, but does not limit the maximum communication range.

The specification defines the PCIe cabling standard, including mechanical and electrical specifications, rules for identifying and labeling cables and connectors. New standard conforms to PCIe 1.1 Base, providing high speed data exchange between PCIe subsystems. Standard cables and connectors are rated for x1, x4, x8 and x16 lines. Sideband signaling is provided for compatibility with existing hardware and software; due to this, it is planned to simplify and accelerate the implementation of the new standard. Accepted specifications support transmission up to 2.5 GHz. In the future, PCI-SIG expects to develop an improved version with support for 5 GHz.

The PCI-SIG group, formed in 1992, currently includes more than 850 companies, including AMD, Broadcom, HP, IBM, Intel, LSI Logic, Microsoft and NVIDIA.
