NVIDIA G80 – “a well-disguised x86 processor”?
Today we have already announced NVIDIA’s plans to develop the concept of GPGPU (General Purpose Computing on a GPU). The fact that NVIDIA G80 is much more than just a graphics processor became clear a long time ago. However, according to the author of the article on the popular Softpedia website, the G80 is capable of replacing the CPU in almost everything.
The main argument is the fact that NVIDIA has created a Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) for the G80, which includes an SDK, an API and a C compiler. CUDA takes the G80 beyond its core tasks by assuming the use of the device as a 128-core universal processor with a shared cache (Parallel Data Cache). And the peak floating-arithmetic performance of the new accelerator exceeds any of the currently available desktop processors.
Finally, there is unofficial information that several AMD engineers, having studied the G80 architecture, came to the conclusion that it is similar to the architecture of x86 processors.
Thus, it may well turn out that NVIDIA is closer to creating an “absolutely universal” processor than AMD is to implementing Fusion.
