Freescale’s Two Symphonies: Multi-Core Signal Processors Support New Recording Standards
Freescale Semiconductor Introduces Two Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) Supporting Multiple High Resolution Audio Standards. DSP56720 and DSP56721 Dual-Core 24-Bit Processors Expand Symphony Family.
Products are manufactured using 90nm CMOS technology and, in addition to two processor cores, contain memory and peripheral units. According to the manufacturer, they can be used to create high-performance and compact, but inexpensive devices.
Each core performs 200 million. operations per second (at a clock frequency of 200 MHz), which opens up the possibility of implementing high-resolution audio algorithms that are demanding on computing resources, including DTS-HD, Dolby Digital + and Dolby TrueHD. Until now, supporting these standards has required developers to use several separate chips – Symphony allows one to get by, which simplifies the circuit and reduces board size.
Symphony DSP56720 and DSP56721 include memory (608K 24-bit words ROM and 248K 24-bit words RAM). The presence of a large amount of memory in many cases eliminates the need for external memory. At the same time, the DSP56720 processor has an interface for external memory. Both products are equipped with SPD / IF transceivers and a 10-channel asynchronous sample rate converter (ASRC). Built-in DMA controllers (8 channels per core).
The manufacturer believes that the novelties will find application in professional and consumer equipment, including on-board systems of cars, Blu-ray and HD DVD players, receivers, amplifiers and sound recorders, musical instruments.
Symphony DSP56720 and DSP56721 are currently available as trial samples. Serial release should begin in the third quarter of this year. Estimated wholesale price of processors – $ 12 per piece.
