Shellcase RT: Tessera’s new development for thinner sensors and MEMS
Tessera Corporation, already mentioned in our news, announced a new development also intended for image sensors. However, not only for them – the new technology of packaging semiconductor crystals WLCSP (wafer-level chip-scale package) allows you to create thinner camera modules and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS).
The key difference between Shellcase RT (Razor Thin) technology and traditional approaches is the use of a polymer layer (albeit, so far only on one side) instead of the traditional glass two-layer “sandwich”. According to the company, this allows the chip thickness to be reduced from 0.9 to 0.5 mm. In addition, SRT allows for more efficient heat dissipation and is completely non-hygroscopic, which makes it possible to use the microcircuits created in this way in consumer and automotive electronics, avionics and equipment for space satellites. When it comes to consumer electronics, if earlier the key factor determining the thickness of, for example, mobile phones was the thickness of the LCD, now it is the thickness of the camera module.
