Sun Ready Rock Processors, Official Timeline Announcement
As expected, Sun Microsystems has announced that it has final samples of its new SPARC CMT processors, codenamed Rock.
They will be one of the key components of the Sun Fire T2000 series servers, which Sun is slated to debut in the second half of 2021.
The new processors will be officially named UltraSPARC T1 (this line is currently represented by models with 4, 6, or 8 cores, each of which is capable of processing up to four data streams simultaneously). Rock, on the other hand, will be 16-core, which will allow with a clock speed increase of just 200 MHz (up to 1.4 GHz) to achieve 30% higher performance than the current UltraSPARC T1, 1.2 GHz. In terms of comparison with competitors ‘products, Sun is not at all shy – according to her, Rock will be twice as powerful and five times more efficient in terms of performance per watt than current competitors’ products. It should not be forgotten that by 2021 the latter will undoubtedly release their new solutions, so such a comparison is hardly correct.
Recall what is known about Rock. It will have 4 blocks of 4 processor cores, each of which will support the processing of two streams of information simultaneously. Thus, Rock will be able to process 32 threads simultaneously. In addition, each of the cores will also have a block responsible for floating point / graphics units (FGU).
Each of the four core blocks will be equipped with a single shared L1 cache for instructions of 32 KB and the same size for data. In total, the processor will have 8 separate L1 caches. The second-level cache is also divided into 4 blocks of 512 KB, each of which has access to 4 cores.
